Reading:
·We use the Common Core State Standards and Lucy Calkins' Reader's Workshop to develop a reading curriculum that covers various genres. Students will take part in various unit studies that follow the Reading Workshop model. Students will learn a variety of reading skills and strategies to help them become better readers. Students will also study various text and topic genres, social emotional topics and authors throughout the year.
Writing:
Writing will occur daily in our classroom through the “Writer’s Workshop”
Q1: Narrative- small moment piece
Q2: Expository- non-fiction how-to books, all about books
Q3: Persuasive- writing reviews and persuasive letters
Q4: Poetry & Review of Narrative-writing fiction stories
Math:
Our math curriculum is Envision. This will be used in conjunction with supplements such as math fact games, flashcards and work with manipulatives. Tests will occur at the end of each unit.
Students will participate in leveled math centers. Again, groups are fluid—they will change according to student needs/skill sets.
Science:
Science: We will follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Q1: Inquiry-What is a Scientist
Q2: Structure/Function- Plant and Animal Adaptations
Q3: Waves: Light and Sound
Q4: Space Systems: Patterns and Cycles
Social Studies (integrated into Language Arts):
Q1: Families and Communities
Q2: Family Stories
Q3: Maps & Geography
Q4: Economics
